Working Equitation is a dynamic, elegant sport that showcases the partnership between horse and rider through precision, agility, and versatility. Originating in Europe as a way to preserve traditional riding styles and working farm techniques, the discipline combines elements of classical dressage, obstacle negotiation, and speed, with a deep emphasis on communication and balance.
The sport is divided into four phases:
Dressage:
A prescribed pattern of movements that highlights harmony and control
Ease of Handling:
Navigating obstacles with finesse, trust, and flow
Speed:
The same obstacles ridden at pace, testing responsiveness and courage
Cattle Work (optional at certain levels):
Moving cattle in teams to demonstrate real-world applications
Whether you're a competitive rider or just seeking a new challenge that strengthens your connection with your horse, Working Equitation is equal parts art and sport and incredibly rewarding.
At Azores Stables, Working Equitation isn’t just a discipline, it’s part of the philosophy. The Lusitano breed was quite literally built for this work: brave, agile, deeply intelligent, and classically trained to respond to the most subtle cues.
We believe Working Equitation develops better riders, stronger horses, and deeper partnerships. It reinforces balance, body control, and trust, qualities that transfer beautifully across disciplines.
Whether you’re looking to refine your aids, introduce obstacles, or build confidence in new settings, our approach is always tailored and horse-first.
We specialize in Working Equitation (WE), classical dressage, and versatile groundwork, all rooted in Lusitano tradition.
